It powers the world’s top 500 supercomputers, runs over 70% of web servers worldwide, forms the software foundation of every Android smartphone, and keeps modern cloud infrastructure afloat. Without Linux, the modern internet as we know it would collapse in seconds.
Yet, if you look at global desktop market share numbers, Microsoft Windows sits comfortably at around 70% to 75%, while Linux on the desktop hovers at a modest 3% to 4%.
This reality creates an obvious paradox: If Linux is fundamentally better, faster, and safer, why are hundreds of millions of people still stubbornly using Windows?
